The Tennessee State University Tigers gave head coach Reggie Barlow his first win in his first game at the 2025 John A. Merritt Classic on August 30 against North Carolina A&T State University. The crowd in Nashville was treated to a close game that was not decided until the last play, TSU blocking an NCAT last-second, game-tying field goal attempt. The 24-21 victory was a great start to the season for the defending 2024 Ohio Valley-Big South Conference Co-Champions. TSU and NCAT are two of the three NCAA Division 1 HBCUs that are not in an HBCU conference.
Nissan Stadium in Nashville was taken over by top-ranked and FCS Defending National Champion North Dakota State University and its fans. The Tenneessee State University Tigers faced them for the second time in two years and the result was almost the same as last year. The Tigers were manhandled in a 3-59 loss on its home turf. Last year's loss sparked TSU to make a run resulting in the Ohio Valley Conference title. Fans hope the same happens this year.

The 23-21 game saw the Bulldogs overcome a 13-21 halftime deficit by scoring 10 points in the third quarter.
